About stories, people, nature, technology, buildings, objects and activities ...
In order to develop a distinct acoustic signature for each of the 24 municipalities, I researched stories, people, nature, technology, buildings, objects, as well as everyday and special activities. The aim was to identify sound locations that mark less a specific geographical point and instead refer to central themes of the region. The bioenergy park in Saerbeck, for example, symbolises technological progress, sustainability, community and energy independence. The motorway interchange in Lotte points to movement, infrastructure and the near-ubiquitous presence of traffic, which strongly shapes the region acoustically. The “Heiliges Meer” nature reserve in Hopsten, by contrast, represents recreation and leisure while also carrying an air of mystery, as legend has it that a submerged monastery lies hidden in its depths.
The selection of sound locations from all 24 towns and municipalities was also carefully coordinated in order to arrange them into an overarching sonic composition that allows for both overlaps and contrasts and, through their interrelations, creates an acoustic texture that is characteristic of the district as a whole.
