KLANGWELT KREIS STEINFURT
Located in the northern Münsterland region, DA, Kunsthaus Kloster Gravenhorst has understood itself since its founding in 2004 as a centre for art and culture situated at the intersection of contemporary artistic practice and vibrant historical mediation. One of the institution’s most distinctive formats is the nationally unique project scholarship KunstKommunikation, which – true to its name – is dedicated to participatory art projects and process‑oriented interventions. Under the auspices of the district of Steinfurt, DA, Kunsthaus has supported up to four art projects each year since 2006. These projects take everyday themes as their starting point, invite people to “take part and think along”, and seek collaboration with local initiatives, associations, schools and others.
In his art project Klangwelt Kreis Steinfurt, the Austrian media artist Hans‑Jürgen Poëtz turns his attention for the first time to all 24 towns and municipalities within the district of Steinfurt. Driven by the question of an “acoustic DNA” – in the sense of a characteristic sound world of a region – the artist travels through the various communities. Equipped with professional recording technology, Poëtz aims to uncover and capture acoustically the topographical, local and historical particularities in cooperation with the people who live and work there. The project always engages equally with the stories of the places and the people who shape them.
This website accompanies the art project, provides engaging background information and makes the artistic process visible. Visitors can follow the current project status, get in touch with the artist and immerse themselves in a sound world that feels familiar and yet full of surprises.
